Interested in trying out Standup Paddle Boarding? The session will include the opportunity to be certified with Basic SUP skills through Paddle Canada, insight of the best practices regarding safety and selling the activity to administration as well as a path forward to getting certified to lead students. This two-hour outdoor session will be on the water and run rain or shine unless the wind is too strong to contend with.

Our yoga and wellness workshops promote physical well-being, emotion regulation, academic performance, reduced anxiety, and resilience to stress. Yoga for Littles (grades 1-5), Yoga for The Middle Years- Self Esteem and Empowerment (grades 6-8), Yoga for Teens- Peer Pressure and Relationships (grade 9-12).Each participant will receive lesson plans, resource lists, and printable templates/posters for your classroom/gymnasium.

Having walked through one of the most personally and professionally challenging school years to date, as I walked through challenges in and out of the classroom I have been struck by how little knowledge there is among fellow members and educators to the tools and resources we have at our disposal. Coupled with my own education in Mental Health and Wellness, it is my hope to present to conference attendees some of the challenges I have walked through and the tools and supports within our school day and outside of that day that have allowed me to remain well and whole in my role as a teacher and as a mother and woman.

PHE Canada is mobilizing the Blueprint for Action. Developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Blueprint for Action aims to better support Administrators, Educators and Pre-Service Teachers with the knowledge and skills to support, change and implement actions related to harm reduction, upstream prevention, equity oriented approaches, and stigma reduction with respect to substance use among youth. Taking a comprehensive school health approach, The Blueprint for Action can be used as a tool to help generate ideas for easy actions you can put into practice in your classroom that will have big impacts on student well-being.

Join Justin as he leads participants on a walk around the surrounding area of the school while participants chat about talking points supplied by the presenter.  A10  • Fireside Chats - Creating A Sense of Community in Schools
We will discuss cross-curricular activities that target student well-being and provide students opportunities to engage in their school beyond the traditional classroom. NRHS teachers will discuss the implementation of school-wide “Take It Outside Days” and the impact such efforts have made on school climate. During this session we will begin by looking at safety policies and considerations for students, as well as local by-laws and provincial regulation. We will also discuss community building and curricular activities which can be done around the campfire.

Robert MacDonald has been a teacher and boys hockey and softball coach in the Strait Regional Centre for Education for the last 22 years. In 2016, he completed his Masters in Administration with a concentration in Mental Health from St. Francis Xavier University. Between the classroom and the rink/ball field, spending so much time with the young men in his school, showed him that something more was needed to support the boys at school and give them an avenue to talk in a safe environment about issues that they face in their everyday lives. In the fall of 2018, Robert began the “guys group” at Richmond Education Centre/Academy with support from Morris Green who is retired from the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness where he worked as the Coordinator of Youth Health. Rob will present a live version of Guys Group with some of his students in this session!

This will include the journey of growing/building a student chapter from the ground up. We will discuss the development of PHE Canada Student Chapters at post-secondary institutions, and share how this applies to educators within all subject fields and grades (P-12) across the province. Participants will leave this session with a better understanding of how to connect with and utilize PHE Canada Student Chapters within their own schools and classrooms.
