Keynote

Dr. Tina Atkinson

Dr. Tina Atkinson is a primary care sport and exercise medicine physician with a special interest in concussion diagnosis, education and management. Dr Atkinson was the team physician with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Canadian Hockey League for 13 seasons, has volunteered at 3 Canada Games and more than 20 national and international events held in Halifax. She has been a team physician with Hockey Canada’s Women’s teams since 2016 and was the Olympic team doc for the Canadian National Women’s team in Beijing 2022.   She was named the Canadian community sport medicine physician of the year in 2021 and inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 2024. She is currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Canadian Sports Institute Atlantic and the Chief Medical Officer of Canoe Kayak Canada recently supporting them in Paris at the 2024 Summer OlympicsIn 2023 she was named the first Chief Medical Officer of the PWHL, the professional women’s hockey league.

Experience volleyball in a revamped teaching model, including a focus on fundamental movement skills through game! SMASHBALL is a new program designed to get kids moving and having fun in a TGFU model playing developmentally appropriate volleyball! There are tons of free resources, including a fully developed app, with specific teacher-designed lesson plans and activity guides.

Boccia is a Parasport that can be played by anyone with or without a physical disability or mobility challenge. It is played recreationally and competitively. Boccia is a co-ed sport, it can be played one on one, in teams of three, or in pairs. Boccia is played indoors, on a court that is similar in size to a badminton court. Boccia can be played by everyone. What to expect from our session: Learn how to play Boccia with our experienced volunteers, try out the equipment have a great time!

 A4  • Once Upon a Breath: Exploring Stories, Stillness, and Mindful Movements as Tools to Thrive
In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the unique intersection of stories, mindfulness, and yoga postures as tools to thrive with their breath as their guideThe workshop will provide a brief overview of current research related to school-based yoga programs, combined with practical activities for yoga to be incorporated into the day. Yoga has the potential to help teachers and students thrive by fostering presence and self-awareness, emotional regulation and balance, and confidence and self-expression. This workshop will teach step by step methods to foster creative movements with mindfulness based practices through children's literature, in a fun and playful way. It is designed to provide a toolkit with methods for teachers to take away to help them, and their students thrive in all parts of the day - from transitions to daily lessons, participants will leave with a sense of how yoga can nurture the whole child.

Last year Rugby Nova Scotia came to TAPHE and were rained out of having a practical/experiential component. We did have some great discussions and networking to help expand our junior high flag rugby offerings. This session will get teachers active and playing a bit of rugby to take away some of the confusion and mystery of a new game. That could look like a small classroom presentation followed by a trip to the field or gym.

A perfect sport for the future. Disc golf is thriving in many parts of the world due in part to its low cost and high accessibility for all. Disc golf is easy to learn but hard to master. It lends itself to so many things that are important in the education world, like problem solving, applied math principals, and sustainable building techniques.  It is the perfect game for all ages and skill sets and is adaptable to almost any landscape. In this session, we'll cover some games and activities you can do with your new Music Bestie that will cover outcomes for both of you. This will have an elementary focus, but everyone is welcome!

Through a life overflowing with speed bumps and potholes there have been many moments that would have given me ample excuse to bow out. In life’s most humbling moments as a teacher, mom and woman I learned that teaching was a beacon of strength and hope despite all the complexities that this profession brings. Learning to use the tools at our fingertips and the innate power we hold as teachers to not only survive but thrive into retirement and beyond. Resilience is more than a buzz word and I will share how I brought it to my life as a teacher and to my life outside of teaching.

Despite food being a tangible, relevant and powerful tool for engaging students, food literacy is an often-neglected connection to school food programs. The NS School Lunch program is transforming access to nutritious food at school, but food can also be a vehicle for learning about health, community, and the environment. This session will help educators see the possibilities of food-based learning - planting seeds of inspiration and providing a better understanding of what food literacy is, and how teachers in NS and beyond are incorporating it into the classroom. It will also include a facilitated discussion to gather your input on advocacy efforts to gain provincial support for food literacy education, so that all NS students are regularly engaged in learning about food and building connections between the food they eat at school and the content they learn in the classroom.

Grades Primary-3 has been updated and is ready for teachers in grades Primary-3 to become familiar with during the 2025-26 school year! In this session, participants will have the opportunity to explore new Health Education curriculum grades Primary-3 highlighting learning and teaching resources provided to schools and/or available digitally to use in your classroom. In response to the call to strengthen curriculum Primary-12 as the beginning to a whole of society approach to address gender-based violence prevention and bystander education, the opportunity to renew grades Primary-3 with many intersecting concepts and skills that are foundational to this work in later grades was not one to be missed. Come and learn more about the when, why, and what of this new curriculum and see the wonderful and fun resources that can help you teach this child-centred and strength-based curriculum. Each participant will walk away with some resources and lessons to use upon returning to their school.

Boccia is a Parasport that can be played by anyone with or without a physical disability or mobility challenge. It is played recreationally and competitively. Boccia is a co-ed sport, it can be played one on one, in teams of three, or in pairs. Boccia is played indoors, on a court that is similar in size to a badminton court. Boccia can be played by everyone. What to expect from our session: Learn how to play Boccia with our experienced volunteers, try out the equipment have a great time!

 C4  • Once Upon a Breath: Exploring Stories, Stillness, and Mindful Movements as Tools to Thrive
In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the unique intersection of stories, mindfulness, and yoga postures as tools to thrive with their breath as their guide.  The workshop will provide a brief overview of current research related to school-based yoga programs, combined with practical activities for yoga to be incorporated into the day. Yoga has the potential to help teachers and students thrive by fostering presence and self-awareness, emotional regulation and balance, and confidence and self-expression. This workshop will teach step by step methods to foster creative movements with mindfulness based practices through children's literature, in a fun and playful way. It is designed to provide a toolkit with methods for teachers to take away to help them, and their students thrive in all parts of the day - from transitions to daily lessons, participants will leave with a sense of how yoga can nurture the whole child.

Last year Rugby Nova Scotia came to TAPHE in Northumberland and were rained out of having a practical/experiential component. We did have some great discussions and networking to help expand our junior high flag rugby offerings, but we would love the chance to come back again.  We are flexible to whatever would be available at the conference in terms of format or length of time, we would love to get teachers active and playing a bit of rugby to take away some of the confusion and mystery of a new game. That could look like a small classroom presentation followed by a trip to the field or gym, whatever is available.

A perfect sport for the future. Disc golf is thriving in many parts of the world due in part to its low cost and high accessibility for all. Disc golf is easy to learn but hard to master. It lends itself to so many things that are important in the education world, like problem solving, applied math principals, and sustainable building techniques.  It is the perfect game for all ages and skill sets and is adaptable to almost any landscape. Come ready to run as you'll experience a mini running clinic, play a running game and go through the paces of a KRC session!

Grades Primary-3 has been updated and is ready for teachers in grades Primary-3 to become familiar with during the 2025-26 school year! In this session, participants will have the opportunity to explore new Health Education curriculum grades Primary-3 highlighting learning and teaching resources provided to schools and/or available digitally to use in your classroom. In response to the call to strengthen curriculum Primary-12 as the beginning to a whole of society approach to address gender-based violence prevention and bystander education, the opportunity to renew grades Primary-3 with many intersecting concepts and skills that are foundational to this work in later grades was not one to be missed. Come and learn more about the when, why, and what of this new curriculum and see the wonderful and fun resources that can help you teach this child-centred and strength-based curriculum. Each participant will walk away with some resources and lessons to use upon returning to their school.

This presentation will share the successes and lessons learned through a "Girl Learn to Lift" club at Bible Hill Jr High. The goal of this club is to encourage female-identifying students in Gr. 8 and 9 to gain interest in physical wellness and activity. Through lifting, they learn how to properly move their bodies while using weights in safe and technical manner while simultaneously increasing their self-esteem, confidence, mental well-being, social connections, strength and stamina.

Drawing from personal teaching experience, I will share practical strategies for supporting students affected by trauma and fostering emotional regulation. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, share challenges, and collaborate on solutions, leaving with actionable ideas to better support their most vulnerable learners.
