Keynote  • Overview of Comprehensive Emergent & Conventional Literacy

This interactive workshop will offer an instructional framework, practical approaches and access to free resources aimed at the provision of comprehensive literacy instruction for students who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood. Content will be geared towards speech-language pathologists working with educators and related classroom professionals to provide meaningful literacy instruction and bridge students from emergent to conventional reading, writing and language learning opportunities. Integration of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) across areas of literacy instruction will be discussed and case examples will be provided. The workshop will feature implementation models and the associated free, web-based professional learning modules and resources that have been developed and refined by the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill over the past decade. Together, these models provide support for the delivery of comprehensive literacy instruction across emergent to conventional learner abilities. These models include Project Core, Tar Heel Shared Reader, Building Bridges and Project VC. The models take a routines-based approach to supporting successful implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction across a variety of classroom arrangements. Practical strategies for addressing the needs of classrooms with students with mixed abilities and tools for monitoring progress and guiding data-informed decisions will be reviewed.  Time for hands-on exploration of the resources in small groups and follow-up discussion will be provided.
