Every writing teacher has this question: How do I teach my students to write well? The answer? Teach with mentor texts. To help students learn how to craft their writing in effective and beautiful ways—and to learn how to use conventions with precision-- students need to see and study mentor texts in writing lessons. In this full-day workshop, Carl Anderson will explain how you can use mentor texts – that is, high-quality examples of the kinds of narrative, informational, and persuasive texts students write -- to teach students how to write well. You’ll learn about four practical steps you can take to integrate mentor texts into your teaching practice: 1. Find and select engaging, high-quality mentor texts. 2. Analyze mentor texts to find multiple craft and conventions teaching points. 3. “Immerse” (or familiarize) students with mentor texts at the beginning of a writing unit of study. 4. Teach with mentor texts in whole and small-group lessons, and 1:1 writing conferences.
