The NSTEA will officially become the Career and Technology Education Association NS at conference 2023! Be there to witness history. The conference will be hosted at the Best Western Glengarry with lots of choices for everyone including hands-on workshops in the hotel, the grand ballroom tradeshowcase, local schools, tours, and workshops at NSCC across the street. Enjoy a day of fun and activity, networking, and hands-on learning for P-12 teachers. Lunch is provided for on-site participants.

Keynote - Tradeshowcase

Trades & Technology Showcase and Networking P-12. This is a great networking opportunity with colleagues, students, government partners, and industry, some of which include:

Eureka Tech, Milwaukee Tools, Digital Logics, Brilliant Labs, Canon Canada, Dept of Ed and Early Childhood Development Career Pathways Division, Regional Youth Pathways Consultants, Skills Canada, Apprenticeship Nova Scotia, Junior Achievement, Department of Labour Safety Division, NS Construction Sector Council and Construction Safety will bring trade simulators to try, Terry Ryan & Chris Phillips are back to do “Get to Know the Mini Lathe”; Students from SCA will teach mug printing and many other fun things. Teachers of all grade levels will find relevant maker skills for their classrooms. NSCC is directly across the street from the Best Western host hotel, so participants will be able to walk over for sessions on their campus.

The Modern Classroom Project is an instructional model created to meet the needs of every student in your classroom regardless of grade level, subject matter, or background using a blended, self-paced, mastery-based approach to teaching that is adaptable and allows teachers to spend more time building relationships with students and providing more one on one support.  This presentation will give educators a brief overview of how the model is designed to work, the impacts the model can have on students and teachers and provide resources for teachers to begin shaping their own Modern Classrooms.

Attention Elementary Teachers! Here is a great opportunity for you to build a puppet theatre for your classroom and take it home at the end of the workshop. Participants will spend the day in the wood lab with a red seal carpenter, Tech Ed teacher who will take them through the build process of a table-top puppet theatre.

All Co-op teachers can use a refresher on the in’s and out’s of Co-op. This session will provide insight into School Insurance issues, risk assessment, challenges, finding quality placements, shared placements, and other duties. Participants should come with their questions as well.

C1: Using Minecraft Education

Participants will learn how to use Minecraft EDU to teach a variety of concepts, including design, through a practical hands on approach. Participants will learn the game mechanics, try out a lesson, and practice. There will also be an opportunity for questions. Bring your own tech, with Minecraft EDU downloaded. (Optional: bring a mouse). Observing is also an options if you wish.

Traditional gluing and finishing techniques for the classroom: A workshop offering the fundamentals in traditional hide glue, its uses, and best applications suited for student needs. We will look at traditional finishing techniques that can be applied and dried within the same class to cut down on project time.

Safety Advisors have worked with partners to develope a 1-hour youth focused, relatable, interactive awareness session for students in O2, Tech Ed, Skilled Trades, and Co-op.. Safety Advisors will provide an overview of this resource, and discuss OHS rights, responsibilities, and how to access free training to enhance their employability.

Based on the successful “Forests Worth Knowing, Atlantic Teachers Tour” program, you will head to the woods to learn about forests and the people who work in the forestry sector every day. Organized by forest professionals, the day will offer a hands-on look at forest management, live forestry operations, forest ecosystems, a sawmill tour to discuss the forest product value chain, career options, forest sciences, technology and much more in an open, friendly and interactive manner. P-12.

This day-long session is hosted in Richmond County by the Manufacturing Trades teacher at Richmond Academy in Cape Breton. Participants will try various types of welding on 8 machines in the skilled trades centre at Richmond Academy.
