Developing Successful Schools

Developing Successful Schools is a program for administrators in Atlantic Canada held annually in July at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick.  Sessions focus on current research in education and are experiential in nature.  Ample opportunity is provided for discussion and dialogue with colleagues from across Atlantic Canada.

DSS is sponsored by the New Brunswick Department of Education, the New Brunswick Teachers' Association, Prince Edward Island Teachers' Federation, the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association.

Each summer, 60 principals are selected to spend four intensive days with one mentoring principal or educational leader.

2018 DSS Institute

The 2018 Developing Successful Schools Institute to be held July 3 - 6, 2018 at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick.  DSS, as it is referred to, provides professional development specific to the needs of school administrators and central office staff. It is also very relevant to aspiring administrators, who may or may not be part of a recognized leadership development or Master’s Degree program.

This summer we are pleased to have Keith McCandles and Liz Rykert.  Keith and Liz will be presenting “The Surprising Power of Liberating Structures (LS): Unleashing A Culture of Innovation.” The sessions will explore how educators can disrupt patterns in how we work together. A repertoire of 33 simple methods will be explored that changes the way results are generated without expensive investments, complicated training or shifts in formal structure.

Nova Scotia has twelve reserved seats at the Institute.  It would be appreciated very much if you would share this information with present and aspiring school administrators in your school, campus or central office. In light of the pending removal of administrators from the NSTU, this professional development opportunity could be seen as an important and timely opportunity. Financial support may be available through your Local NSTU PD Committee, so interested Members are encouraged to contact them for details.

Registration is due by May 11 and must be sent to the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, attention Jim King (jimking@staff.nstu.ca).
