A3: Introduction to the Anxiety Recovery Program

One of our most important tasks, as educators, is to be properly equipped with effective tools for supporting our students through the paralysis of anxiety. Given that one in three teens suffer from some form of anxiety, these skills are more essential than ever before. In this workshop, participants will learn to identify anxiety red flags, and then learn essential body/mind techniques for helping students recover a sense of peace and freedom.

Some of these techniques include:

  • Understanding the neuroscience of anxiety, worry, fear and panic
  • Cognitive therapy for working with anxiety patterns
  • Movement practices designed to regulate the nervous system
  • Breathing and mindfulness practices that rewire the anxious brain

This session will provide perspectives and strategies for educators with respect to inferring aspects of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is a style of teaching that promotes diverse, authentic learning environments for staff and students. Through authentic storytelling, by a genre called Spoken Word Poetry, educators will:

  • Gain a better understanding of what it is to be responsive, both culturally and linguistically.
  • Learn the importance of building relationships with students, and how to create a school environment that is culturally responsive.
  • Reflect on their current pedagogical approach with an equitable lens.

See how being culturally and linguistically responsive in teaching increases student success.

A9: STOMP: Taking a whole school, youth focused approach to prevent smoking and vaping in school communities across Canada

 

Commercial Tobacco use (smoking and vaping) is a real issue in schools. So, what can we do about it? Join PHE Canada as we share the Students Together Moving to Prevent Tobacco Use (STOMP) project and how youth are taking action when it comes to addressing smoking and vaping and creating a healthier school environment. In this session we will also share resources you can use to address substance use, tobacco and vaping at your school.

We at Blue Nose Marathon want to do our part in making children and families feel included and welcome to Blue Nose Nation on Blue Nose weekend. We also understand that coming to Halifax on a May long weekend is not feasible to all families, for many reasons, so we have introduced our Local Youth Run concept where we bring the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run to your school!

After attending the Elementary Physical Education Workshop in Pomona, California, Kaelin came back with a bucket overflowing with ideas, activities and tools to implement in her physical education program. What’s better about getting great resources and ideas is to share them with others. This session will demo some of the activities Kaelin learned while at EPEW, and will also provide time for a demo slam: a 2-minute sharing opportunity for other session attendees. Come to give a little and get a lot! *Those attending are encouraged to bring an idea/game/tip that can be shared in two minutes or less.

Learn from physiotherapists about common reasons we see kids in our clinic and how we work with them. Keynote - Tanya Estwick

Tanya Estwick is a Poet and works as a consultant dealing with Equity and Race Relations Cross-Cultural Human Rights issues for The Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education. She has over twenty-two years of extensive classroom experience teaching multiple grade levels and subjects while coordinating a Cultural Academic Enrichment program for the Black Educators Association. Tanya has worked in the psychology and education department in a federal prison; and as an educator in community and university S.T.E.M. and literacy enrichment programs. She studied in Universities across Canada and in the United States. A proud mother and grandmother, she is the author of the book, “The System Almost H.A.D. Me! Understanding Culturally Responsive Pedagogy... For Educators by an Educator.”
