The NSTU guide to pregnancy, parental and adoption benefits explores NSTU Provincial and APSEA agreement provisions, benefits under Employment Insurance, the Teachers' Pension Plan and illness arising from pregnancy.
Please note that the federal government has made some temporary changes to the EI program regarding access to EI maternity and parental benefits: Effective September 27, 2020:
- Only 120 hours of insured work are required;
- For maternity and standard parental benefits, a minimum benefit of $500/week will be paid;
- For extended parental benefits, a minimum benefit of $300/week will be paid;
- If you received CERB, the 52 week qualifying period will be extended.
These changes are in effect for a 1 year period. Teachers interested in how these changes may apply to them should contact Service Canada directly for advice.
