Preparing for an Interview

Successful interviews begin long before you walk into the room. Thoughtful preparation helps you present yourself as confident, knowledgeable, and well-aligned with the position.

Do Your Homework

  • Understand the Role
Know exactly what position you’re applying for and be able to clearly articulate why you’re interested in it.

  • Research the School and Community
If the interview is for a specific school, take time to learn about its programs, culture, demographics, and surrounding community.

  • Familiarize Yourself with Key Documents
Read relevant curriculum, policy documents, and any strategic plans. Know what the current educational priorities and initiatives are within the school board or district.

Clarify Your Educational Beliefs

  • Be Ready to Speak About Your Philosophy of Education
Clearly explain the principles that guide your teaching practice. Be prepared to discuss key topics such as:
    • Classroom management and discipline
    • Inclusion and equity
    • Culturally responsive teaching
    • Differentiated instruction

Practice and Prepare

  • Rehearse Common Questions
Anticipate likely interview questions and prepare thoughtful, specific responses. Practice speaking clearly and confidently.

  • Know Your Strengths—and Areas for Growth
Be honest about where you excel and where you're still developing. Self-awareness is a sign of a reflective practitioner.

  • Be Ready to Discuss Your Technology Skills
Schools value educators who are comfortable with digital tools. Be prepared to describe your level of computer literacy and how you use technology in the classroom.

Bring the Right Materials

  • Prepare a Brief, Informative Resume
Have extra copies ready to leave with the interview team.

  • Ask Ahead About Requirements
Find out if the team expects you to bring any specific materials or prepare in a particular way (e.g., a sample lesson, portfolio, or presentation).
